Teeth Stains – Causes, Types, and Tips to Remove Teeth Stains

Teeth Stains – Causes, Types, and Tips to Remove Teeth Stains

One of the most used body parts is teeth and as it’s white in color, we often get teeth stains and if not removed or cleaned properly, tooth discoloration can be the result as well. There can be various reasons behind the teeth stains. One of the major causes of teeth stains is obviously the food we eat or the drinks we consume. Other reasons can be poor oral hygiene and one of the rare causes of teeth stains is your medication.

There are different types of teeth stains that may appear on your teeth like white spots on teeth, black spots on the tooth, brown stains on teeth or even the coffee stains on teeth. Most of the teeth stains are like topical stains only i.e. on the outer surface only. But in some case, these stains can occur under the outer layer i.e. below the enamel.

Different Kinds of Tooth Discoloration

Most of the times we take teeth stains and tooth discoloration in the same meaning but actually, these are two different terms. As we told earlier, tooth discoloration is the next stage after teeth stains. If we take no action when teeth stains occur, this may result in the form of tooth discoloration. Sometimes the tooth discoloration may occur because of the changes in the structure and composition of our teeth. It is rare but it may happen and this type of tooth discoloration is often hard to treat.

To a layman, tooth discoloration is just the tooth discoloration but dentists categorize this phenomenon into three different types:

1- Extrinsic Teeth Stains

Extrinsic Teeth Stains

Stains which are just on the outer most surface of the teeth i.e. on the enamel are termed as extrinsic teeth stains. Extrinsic teeth stains are majorly caused by the remains of food and drinks on our teeth. These residue food and drink particles create a layer and cover the teeth’s outer layer. If left uncleaned for a day or two, this layer can turn into black spots on tooth or brown stains on teeth.

If you are consuming tobacco, cola drinks or the beverages containing caffeine then your teeth are more prone to teeth stains. To avoid teeth stains you must brush your teeth twice a day every day.

2- Intrinsic Teeth Stains

Intrinsic Teeth Stains

Intrinsic teeth stains are a little hard to remove. Unlike extrinsic teeth stains, simply brushing your teeth will not be enough to remove intrinsic teeth stains because these are not on the outer surface or enamel layer. Intrinsic teeth stains are under or below the enamel.

The outer layer of your teeth is a thin layer and that’s the layer which gives your teeth the bright and shiny feature. This layer is thin and sensitive and can be damaged easily if any harsh chemical is used or if it is not cleaned properly. Children often destroy this layer by using extra toothpaste which is the habit of most of the children. They love to eat toothpaste because it is sweet but the fluoride in the toothpaste can damage this outer surface of the teeth and then the stains can easily reach below the enamel.

If you are intrinsic teeth stains, you will have to consult your dentist so that he may remove these teeth stains by bleaching or he may recommend you some teeth whitening product to be used at home.

3- Aged Discoloration and Teeth Stains

With the age, the enamel layer gets thinner and weaker and hence your teeth become prone to teeth stains. You might be surprised to know that the actual color of your teeth is yellow. It’s just the enamel which makes them shiny bright and white. Once with the age, when the enamel gets thinner or is removed completely, the actual yellow layer of teeth is exposed which is rough as well. It can easily get stains. Discoloration of teeth due to age cannot be avoided but it can be delayed if we take proper care of our teeth and brush them daily at least twice.
